About the city of Derby ...
About Derby ...
Derby began as a Roman fort, however the name Derby is derived from the Danish
words 'deor' and 'by' meaning deer settlement. In 1717 the first silk mill
in England opened in Derby and in the mid-19th century the Midland Railway
Company
began
making railway engines here and the railway workshops soon became a major employer.
During the 19th century there were also many iron foundries in Derby as well
as brewing and paint making.
In 1907 Rolls Royce opened a factory in Derby making aircraft engines and cars. 1904 saw the arrival of electric trams, these continued to run here until buses replaced them, in 1930.
In 1916 a Zeppelin airship bombed Derby killing 5 people and in 1924 a war memorial was erected, during World War II German bombing killed 74 people and injured over 300.
In 1974 an Industrial Museum opened in the old silk mill next to the river Derwent
(now the southern end of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Corridor)
and in 1975 the Eagle Shopping Centre was built and the Playhouse Theatre opened.
The Assembly Rooms in Derby opened in 1977 and in 1976 Derby was twinned with
the German city of Osnabruck.
In 1977 Derby was made a city as part of the Queens Silver Jubilee Celebrations and today the population of Derby is in excess of a quarter of a million, excluding the student population which makes Derby a buzzing and vibrant location.
Since being granted City status, Derby has undergone a great deal of development in the 21st century and its
history rich, compact city centre, lends itself well to an exciting, fun and cultural
hen treasure hunt experience.
